If you are having communication difficulties or are struggling to keep your relationship intact, couples therapy might be an important option to consider. Sometimes we lose our ability to hear and be heard by those who are closest to us. We may have pent up anger and resentment we have never dealt with which is beginning to sour the relationship and make it difficult to access the love we feel for each other. In times like this it is often helpful to have a neutral third party to support us in navigating through the misuderstandings and miscommunications. I support couples in getting clearer about what each one is wanting and how to communicate in clearer and more effective ways. I have had success with supporting couples in changing patterns and taking responsibility for their expectations and disappointments; and in helping those on the brink of divorce reconnect and heal past wounds. I have also supported couples in getting through difficult patterns and helped them each see how they were contributing to the dynamic. By identifying the dynamic there is an opportunity to shift it and change.
Think about giving couples therapy a chance if you are feeling stuck or bored in your relationship. Sometimes we need to spend time nurturing and focusing on our relationship in order for it to stay alive and grow. Focusing on our relationship can reconnect us to the love we experience for the other. Learning to navigate more effectively through our difficulties helps us have an easier and more enjoyable time. These tools can be taught. I have witnessed many couples change and grow.
